MANUEL de FALLA
Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) is the greatest Spanish composer of the 20th century. He studied with the well known Felipe Pedrell, the teacher who was instrumental in the revival of Spanish music towards the end of the 19th century. de Falla is best known for his ballet, El Amor Brujo (Love, The Magician), Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and the ballet, The Three Cornered Hat.



The one-act ballet, El Amor Brujo (Love, The Magician), is based on a Spanish gypsy tale about Candelas, a gypsy girl who is possessed and driven mad by the ghost of her former unfaithful lover. To get rid of the jealous ghost, Carmelo, her new lover, uses the magical powers of a beautiful friend. The intense Ritual Fire Dance chases away the evil spirits.

ISAAC ALBENIZ

Issac Albeniz was an important Spanish composer and pianist (1860-1909) who is best known for his piano works and compositions based on folk tales. He was a piano genius at an early age. When he was 12, he ran away from home by stowing away on a ship bound for Buenos Aires. He travelled through many countries and by age 15, had given concerts worldwide.

Some of his best known compositions are the piano suite, Iberia, and the orchestral works. Spanish Rhapsody, and Catalonia. Many of his works have been transcribed for the guitar.

EDOUARD LALO

Edouard Lalo was a French composer (1823-1892) who is best known for his beautiful Symphonie Espagnole for violin and orchestra.

LUIGI BOCCHERINI

Luigi Boccherini was an Italian classical era composer (1743-1805) who for most of his life lived in his adopted country of Spain. He wrote a great deal of chamber music and was himself a virtuoso cellist. His Fandango from The Quintet for Guitar and Strings in D major is a classical expression of the distinctive Spanish style. Presented are an orchestral version and a version transcribed for guitars.
